Cumhuriyet Bayramı Resepsiyonu Konuşması, 29.10.2011

Your Excellency Minister Dr. İbrahim Omar Hajri,
Distinguished Guests,

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you, today, on the National Day of the Republic of Turkey. Today we are celebrating the 88th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on that day was an important step for Turkey to reach the highest level of contemporary civilization.

On this remarkable day I bow with respect in front of the valuable memory of Atatürk, and all the commanders and soldiers of the Turkish army who lost their lives not only in the War of Liberation but also today during the fight against terrorism. We also remember our citizens who lost their lives in strong earthquake which hit our country again.

Turkey is today considered to be a country that not only safeguards but also disseminates contemporary concepts such as human rights, democracy, rule of law and social equity.

Moreover today, Turkey is the 16th largest economy in the world and the 6 th in Europe.

Turkey's deep-rooted tradition of statehood and democracy, its advantages emanating from geography and history, its young and educated population and its dynamic economy play a key role in the success of this vision.

Distinguished Guests,

I would like to touch upon the excellent relations between Turkey and Yemen. H.E. President Abdullah Gül’s official visit to Yemen earlier this year was the most significant event during my mission. The agreements and protocols signed during the visit constituted a strong ground for further improving our bilateral relations. The opening of the martyrdom monument, which we consider as the sign of the deep and strong brotherly relations between Turkey and Yemen, was made during this visit as well.

The economic relations between our countries are improving speedily. Our trade volume stood at around $ 400 million last year, which could be diversified and enhanced for both sides. We are trying to increase that amount to 1 billion USD in the near future.

Turkey views the acts of violence targeting the political stability of this friendly and brotherly country in the past months with concern. It is Turkey’s sincere hope that the unfortunate events taking place for some time now in Yemen, which has an important position in its region throughout history, will come to an end soon. Yemen’s stability is important for the whole region’s peace and stability. Turkey supports Yemen’s national unity, territorial integrity and stability.

Distinguished Guests,

Another event that makes today special for me is that I have completed my mission in Yemen as of today. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Government of Yemen and all authorities and the Yemeni people. During these three years, I have been received very well by all government authorities, at all levels.

My special thanks also go to my distinguished colleagues with whom I have developed very good relations. I wish very much to encounter them again in the future, in any part of the world.

As I conclude my remarks, I would like to welcome you all once again and wish you an enjoyable time.
